Wikipedia describes Search Engine Optimization (SEO) as ;
"The process of improving the volume and quality of traffic to a web site from search engines via "natural" ("organic" or "algorithmic") search results for targeted keywords. Usually, the earlier a site is presented in the search results, or the higher it "ranks", the more searchers will visit that site. SEO can also target different kinds of search, including image search, local search, and industry-specific vertical search engines. As a marketing strategy for increasing a site's relevance, SEO considers how search algorithms work and what people search for. SEO efforts may involve a site's coding, presentation, and structure, as well as fixing problems that could prevent search engine indexing programs from fully spidering a site. Other, more noticeable efforts may include adding unique content to a site, ensuring that content is easily indexed by search engine robots, and making the site more appealing to users. Another class of techniques, known as black hat SEO or spamdexing, use methods such as link farms and keyword stuffing that tend to harm search engine user experience. Search engines look for sites that employ these techniques and may remove them from their indexes."

As a rule of thumb If you have a specialized business or service that is specific to a certain geographic location (i.e) Lets say you build houses in Wooster, Ohio which is a small town of around 28,000 people and there are a handfull of builders for that area , when a search is done on lets say for example " build house Wooster Ohio" , the chances are that you will come up on the first page or two because the competition is very little. Now on the other hand if you want to appear first on the list before the handfull of other builders you would want to employ SEO tactics to secure higher SE ranking , or lets say you want to think big and cover a wider range of territory , you would use a SEO tactic that would build upon keywords in the search to include which locations you want to cover... This now brings more competition in which you will need to not only have good keywords but a strong relevance to the Search Engines . Strong relevance is perceived by SE's by a combination of things one being a decent number of strong relevant backlinks , meaning you have a good amount of other sites that are well established and fairly relevant to your site that provide a link back to you. Another factor is building a good non spamm filled site designed with lots and lots of "gooey links" and anchored internal links, SE spiders love theese and tend to rank sites that embrace this with great regard. The last being traffic which some still feel that higher traffic rates build relevance faster , but in my experience I find it is the other way around .
